NYT Fact Checks 1/23 GOP Debate - Verdict: one guess
Florida Debate Fact Check
Yes, we expect during these debates that we will hear nothing but lie after lie shot through with xenophobia, racism and outright delusion, but I've been pretty impressed at the speed and thoroughness with which the NYT has been debunking the non-stop nonsense being flung at us.

A couple of my favorites:

Santorum and Terri Schiavo
....Tonight, Mr. Santorum said he “didn’t call for Congressional intervention, I
called for a judicial hearing”
to review a case in which the parents, who were
constituents of his from Pennsylvania, and Ms. Schiavo’s husband were on different
sides.

But a New York Times Magazine article in May 2005 about Mr. Santorum said he
“not only pushed the Senate to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case, but he also
traveled to Florida and prayed with her parents.”

*******

American Presence in the Persian Gulf
... it is possible that President Obama already has a tougher plan in place in the
Persian Gulf than Mitt Romney is imagining.
(Romney) said that to counter the
Iranian threat, “we ought to have an aircraft carrier in the gulf.”

In fact, White House and Pentagon officials say they keep an average of 1.8
carriers in the gulf at any one time now — that allows one to go off station
periodically — and have built up antimissile defenses around Iran.

Amazing how they lie. I'm always glad to see them called on it.

It's great to see someone else finally doing it besides Steve Benen and ThinkProgress. Although, yes, the NYT is probably preaching to the choir, but maybe the choir's a little bigger there than it is at my usual haunts.

When Gingrich was talking about why he left the House,
I was yelling, "Liar, liar, pants on fire" at the TV!

Silence is consent.

Unfortunately in this post 1984 world facts have become fungible commodities.

The Times has for years done fact checking, and it's a lot of fun reading its commentary on the commercials.

But, liberals firmly believe it's a tool of the right and conservatives are convinced it's a tool of the left so the only ones who read it are convinced EVERYONE is lying through their teeth.

Sadly the Republicans have a lot they have to lie about
if they were honest the GOP wouldn't even get elected dog catcher

IMHO if the GOP had to compete in 100% free and fair elections they would win very few of them. Since they wouldn't (and they know they wouldn't), they have to rig the system with electronic voting machines, gerrymandering, voter disenfranchisement (prohibiting felons to vote, voter ID laws), smears, lies, distortions, rovian "dirty tricks", etc.
