What you might not be getting about Mitt
On May 6, 1843, Mormon church founder and self proclaimed prophet Joseph Smith was conversing with two of his religious compatriots, Edward Rushton and Theodore Turley, at his home. At one point, Smith delivered his prophecy about the fate of the United States:

"Gentlemen, I say to you: There will come a time when the United States Constitution shall hang by a thread, and it will be preserved and saved by a White Horse."

The White Horse was understood to mean the Mormon Church. This utterance came to be known as the LDS White Horse Prophecy.

In 1855, Mormon prophet and church president Brigham Young declared in the Salt Lake Tabernacle that “when the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the ‘Mormon Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it” (Journal of Discourses 2:182).

As a wee Mormon kid myself, I can tell you were all brought up with this teaching that says the Mormon Church would swoop in at some future date and save this nation's constitution and it's entire system.

When you hear that Mitt Romney is on a hell bent rampage for power, that he is breathlessly spouting his talking points and brazonly intent on being president, I believe that is absolutely true. But, I don't think it's for purely for personal ambition.

Mitt is well aware of the Prophecy and of The White Horse. He is a practicing, diligent Mormon. It is very, very possible...and frightening...that he believes he is to be the fulfillment of that prophecy.

When you see him huff and puff and bully and browbeat his path to the White House, you can bet your bottom dollar that he does so feeling the hot, long dead breath of Joseph Smith on his neck.

That's frightening, as bad as the Dominionists. Is this the religious war for the country? The rightwing fighting among themselves for high holy?

Well what makes this interesting is that the traditional Christian/Evangelical political Right in this country is very suspicious of Mormons, and also I've heard that a huge chunk of the Teabaggers will not support a Mormon GOP candidate. So it is a holy war of sorts, but amongst each other. The Dominionists (Perry, Bachmann) have failed to get traction in this one. But in the future, who knows what will happen if they just double down and get even whackier next time around.

One thing is clear about all those that are running as "Evangelical" conservatives. They are more concerned about their endorsement from God than in the Constitution, the law (in so far as a law goes against their personal belief system) or the opinions of the majority of the people.

When you believe that God is on your side then all opposition must be coming from the enemies of God, the devil and his minions.

Given that fact it is hardly surprising that they would "double down" next time around. Given that they believe they are called by God they can hardly do anything else.

RE: What you might not be getting about Mitt
Mormon ideology has a similar dynamic. When I was little, I was taught that "God gave you freedom of choice". However as the years went on, you learned that "choice" actually meant the church's choice or the Devil. There was no serious, liberal open inquiry of mind. If you did not go along with the official stance, you were still considered "in spirit turmoil". You were often asked to pray about your questions, and the answer would be revealed to you. BUT....if the answer you got was not in sync with the official word from the Church central, you would be informed Satan gave you that answer.

The only way to win with that rule in sway, was to do what I did - bow out.
