Romney says Gingrich can't take heat of a campaign

By SHANNON McCAFFREY and KASIE HUNT

BEDFORD, N.H. (AP) - Continuing a nasty dispute over negative campaign tactics, Mitt Romney said Wednesday that if Newt Gingrich can't take the heat generated by attack ads during the GOP presidential primary, he'll wilt going up against President Barack Obama.

<..> "There are limits to what you can tell a PAC," Romney said Wednesday on Fox News Channel. "I'm sure I could go out and say, 'Please, don't do anything negative.' But this is politics. And if you can't stand the heat in this little kitchen, wait until the Obama's Hell's Kitchen turns up the heat."

<..> "I don't object to being outspent. I object to lies. I object to negative smear campaigns," Gingrich said Tuesday, suggesting that Romney was being less than truthful when he claimed he can't do anything about hard-hitting spots coming from the independent group, Restore Our Future, formed by staffers from his 2008 campaign. "Understand, these are his people running his ads, doing his dirty work while he pretends to be above it."

"I think these guys hire consultants who get drunk, sit around and write stupid ads," a fired-up Gingrich said. "Every one of these candidates should take responsibility for the lies they are putting up."

Who knew Newt was such a whiner?

Gingrich doesn't blame Boehner: “If I had to try to negotiate with Barack Obama and Harry Reid, I have no idea what it would be like.”

Newt admitting he's not up to the job. We knew that.

It's getting hot in here: Gingrich challenges Romney; says he can handle the heat just fine

By NBC's Jo Ling Kent, Andrew Rafferty, and Domenico Montanaro

Newt Gingrich got fiery when talking about Romney questioning whether he can handle the heat of a campaign.

<..> Gingrich said: "I'll tell you what. If he wants to test the heat, I'll meet him anywhere in Iowa next week, one-on-one, 90 minutes no moderator, just a timekeeper. He wants to try out the kitchen? I'll be happen to debate him anywhere. We'll bring his ads, and he can defend [them].

Oh gawd, Newt trying to get another Lincoln-Douglas type debate so he can pontificate for 2 hours. If I was one of the others I'd tell him to go buy some ads because they aren't giving him free airtime. Newt is a bully.

True enough, but Romney better watch himself. He's in the midst of creating another custom campaign ad for Obama. Assuming he goes on to get the nomination, we'll see how well Romney likes the kitchen during the real campaign a few months from now.

Yep. PBO has plenty of money to buy ads with.....and so does Mitt. But Mitt will be called on everything.

AP Interview: Romney says no to Gingrich debate

Dec 22, 2:41 PM (ET)

By KASIE HUNT and STEVE PEOPLES

BETHLEHEM, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday spurned chief rival Newt Gingrich's challenge for a one-on-one debate ahead of the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses but dismissed the notion - suggested by the former House speaker - that he's afraid to participate in such a face-off.

"We've had many occasions to debate together and we'll have more, I presume quite a few more, before this is finished," Romney told The Associated Press. "But I'm not going to narrow this down to a two-person race while there are still a number of other candidates that are viable, important candidates in the race. I want to show respect to them."

Gingrich has called on Romney to condemn or defend attack ads airing in Iowa by groups friendly to the former Massachusetts governor. Campaigning Thursday in Virginia, Gingrich told reporters that Romney's decision "tells you a lot about Gov. Romney." Gingrich said he will continue to say that Romney "doesn't mind hiding out behind millions of dollars of negative ads, but he doesn't want to defend them. The ads are false.

Newt will throw a tantrum.

If Newtie objects to lies and smear campaigns, why does he engage in them?

Shrug
