Gingrich takes the lead

Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's national polling. He's at 28% to 25% for Herman Cain and 18% for Mitt Romney. The rest of the Republican field is increasingly looking like a bunch of also rans: Rick Perry is at 6%, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, Jon Huntsman at 3%, and Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum each at 1%.

Compared to a month ago Gingrich is up 13 points, while Cain has dropped by 5 points and Romney has gone down by 4. Although a fair amount of skepticism remains about the recent allegations against Cain there is no doubt they are taking a toll on his image- his net favorability is down 25 points over the last month from +51 (66/15) to only +26 (57/31). What is perhaps a little more surprising is that Romney's favorability is at a 6 month low in our polling too with only 48% of voters seeing him favorably to 39% with a negative opinion.

<..> Cain's base of strength continues to be with Tea Party voters, where he gets 33% to 31% for Gingrich, and only 11% for Romney. This is where you can really see that Gingrich will be the beneficiary if Cain continues to implode- Gingrich's favorability with Tea Partiers is 81/14. Romney's is 43/45. There's a lot of room for Gingrich to build up support with that key group of Republican voters.

Good gawd, Newt! What a farce.

And, as TPM says.. "Now It's Newt's Turn!"

You know what cracks me up about that? That mitt the flipflopping robot gets shot down because his waxy insulting schtick is getting OLD. Newt's on top but how long before he gets the boot from the teahadists? When he starts getting more scrutinized?

RE: Newt Gingrich in the lead!
I'm speechless. 2 months from primary #1 and they only have 2 serious candidates - one in 3rd place, the other nearly dead last. Surprise

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. They are the old voices of fear and impotence. - Anonymous

RE: Newt Gingrich in the lead!
The voters are fickle. Just think if you had to choose one nut from among the eight. The one who didn't step on his/her tongue in the latest debate wins the prize of the week. Mittens had better get his game on, and Huntsman just hasn't caught on. But Newt. Newt who resigned in scandal, Newt with his 3 wives gotten in playing who's the new one. Newt who lives in the past and doesn't know shit about the policies of today. It really turns my stomach.

Newt Gingrich promises nation eight years of hell

Quote:I believe we're in real trouble. I don't think this is Barack Obama. This is bigger, deeper, harder than Barack Obama. In all honesty, I don't say this with any sense of pride, it worries me about the system, in all honesty, I don't think there's anybody else with the range of experience, the range of background, the willingness to take the beating that I've exhibited in 53 years. I find it very formidable to think that I might win and that with your help, we might go through eight very difficult years. I don't know any other way for this country to get back on track except to be willing to do that. It can't be about me. It has to be about the American people.

Does anyone know what that reference is to his being the toughest guy in "53 years"? Technically, he'd be talking about 1958, and as Mike Yarvitz points out, Mr. Gingrich is a historian (he's promoting another of his projects tonight). Fellow history buffs?

RE: Newt Gingrich in the lead!
You know, almost a year ago I thought it'd be Gingrich as their nominee. Kind of like Bob Dole in '96 - a token conservative given his due.

Now I might be right...

Still think Romney wins. But all it takes is Gingrich or Cain winning Iowa to throw this thing to the dogs.

That is so interesting that you thought Newt would be the man. He never entered my radar except as a has-been with delusions. I need to pay better attention to what you are saying!!!

RE: Newt Gingrich in the lead!
I think I just assumed back then that Romney would never catch on because no one likes him and that other viable candidates would step aside.

Gingrich, to me, always made the most sense because he's a rock solid conservative, has name recognition and is entering his twilight years.

This is what I said back in April '09 on another forum:

Quote:I could see Romney running because he thinks far higher of himself than most. But, as was proven last year, he isn't very well liked. Romney faded badly in the Republican Primaries and I don't see him catching much fire again.

In the end, that leaves a retread like Gingrich. He's essentially the 2012's Bob Dole. A has-been in the party that will only get the nomination because no one else wants it. Sort of a tip of the hat to his seniority in the party. Gingrich will rally the base, turnoff moderate voters and lose in a landslide, retire from politics officially and then you'll start seeing the likes of Sarah Palin, Mark Sanford and Bobby Jindal, as they ready for 2016.

Okay. So I was off about Mark Sanford! roflmao
