12/22/2010 By Doug Cunningham UAW President Bob King tells Automotive News that the union will launch an organizing a campaign in January to unionize Asian and German automaker factories in the U.S. King said the UAW has sent letters to the CEO’s of foreign automakers with U.S. plants indicating the UAW wants to organize the plants and cooperate to improve operations. The union is asking the foreign auto companies to pledge not to interfere with free and fair union elections at their plants. The UAW so far isn’t aying what kind of response it got from the CEO’s. The UAW says it will start the organizing campaign at the foreign auto plants in the U.S. with a news conference in January. The union has stopped its picketing of Toyota dealerships protesting Toyota’s closing of the Fremont California auto plant. King said it’s an effort to reach out to Toyota for the organizing drive. He said his union wants to be the UAW of the 21st century and the picketing didn’t work towards that goal.
