GOP insiders 'terrified' of a Gingrich nomination
I can't stop laughing at what disaster the Republican party has become. I wish them more of the same for a long time into the future.

I think the Democrats are primed to win big across the country no matter which candidate wins the Republican nomination, but the wins could be HUGE if Gingrich gets the nod.

Quote:"The Republican establishment might not be wild about Mitt Romney, but they're terrified by Newt Gingrich," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP campaign strategist who teaches politics at the University of Southern California.

The anti-Gingrich statements have come from conservative columnists, talk-show hosts including Ann Coulter, former Ronald Reagan administration officials and others.

One of the harshest was written by former Sen. Bob Dole, the party's 1996 presidential nominee.

"I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich, but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late," Dole wrote in the conservative magazine National Review. "If Gingrich is the nominee, it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state and federal offices."

As speaker from 1995 through 1998, Gingrich "had a new idea every minute, and most of them were off the wall," Dole wrote. Dole said he struggled against Democrats' TV attacks in his 1996 campaign, "and in every one of them, Newt was in the ad."

Gingrich has reacted unevenly to the accusations, sometimes denouncing them, other times wearing them like a badge of honor.

They ought to be terrified, the man has a long history of bad moves. I saw a tweet this morning that said Newt was telling the peeps that he is going all the way to the convention. Like a terrier with a rat, he's going to hang on.

This election season we get to have fun watching the Republicans tear themselves apart over two worthless candidates.
At least when our party had a battle for the nomination in '08 we had two good candidates. I would have gotten behind either Obama or Clinton, whoever won.

I would have too. Our candidates were both worthy of being POTUS. Neither of the GOP's are, and the pubs know it.

I now what you mean. This year, the Republican voters seem to have the choice between cat sh*t and dog sh*t.

Silence is consent.

I especially like the part of Dole's rant where he talks about how Newt would show up every day carrying an empty bucket - Dole says he never figured out what that was about, and he doesn't think Gingrich did either.

Rachel had the explanation yesterday.

It was a long standing tradition, no doubt dating to before refrigeration became common, that every office in the capital would have a bucket of ice delivered to it. Among the cost cutting measures that Newt instituted when he became speaker was the elimination of that tradition of ice delivery.

Newt apparently was so proud of his cost cutting that he used that bucket as a constant reminder tp everyone.

Thanks, Pappy. Have to admit though, I liked the idea of Gingrich wandering around with an empty bucket like a crazy uncle better.

Just because he had a reason for carrying an empty bucket that does not preclude his being a crazy uncle.

RE: GOP insiders 'terrified' of a Gingrich nomination
That is reassuring. I thought he was carrying a bucket due to incontinence.

But don't ANYBODY think the Republicans are headed for forty years in the wilderness. PLEASE remember what we were saying about them after election day, 2008. The end of the Republican Party as a viable entity, etc. etc.

They have three things in endless supply that we do not: anger, envy, and dirty money.

The economic bad times they brought on have affected tens of millions of die-hard Republican voters who would rather slit their wrists than admit their party was the party responsible for their misery. Fox reinforces this 24/7 and they all watch NOTHING but Fox. These are people who will believe that 2+2=7 if Fox says it does, and will throw away their calculators as "Democrat-made" or "foreign-made" if they keep coming up with 4 as the correct answer. They are looking to blame SOMEBODY for their troubles, and Obama is it. Or the "Democrat Party." Or "libbruls." or ANYBODY who isn't them.

As long as there are guys out there like Adelson, with a personal fortune of $22 billion, willing and able to give unlimited millions out of pocket money to right wing causes and candidates like Gingrich (thank you "Justices" Roberts and Alito) with the full blessing of the Supreme Court, then there will be a robust Republican Party, no matter how far in outer space they are. Money buys advertising, and America loves its media, whether it's People Magazine, Fox Noise or the internet. Lots of advertising is bought by lots of money, and they have more of it than we do.

Yes, the Republican establishment may be terrified of a Gingrich nomination, but not because his chances of being elected are any worse than Romney's. It's because he is not as likely to do the bidding of their moneyed backers once in office as someone like W, who had one of the money men (Cheney) as his VP in the office around the corner to keep an eye on him. Gingrich is arrogant, nasty, for privilege, and utterly disdainful of the 99% (from whence he came)--he is the ultimate symbol of the Republican Party. Where Obama wears his "community organizer" background as a badge of honor, Republicans would hide in shame from such a background, and hurl it as a term of scorn at Obama.

Gingrich's only crime in the eyes of the Republican insiders would be insubordination. Everything else about him suits them just fine.
