"The Senate must put our nation on the right side of history and repeal DADT"
Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) - 12/17/10 04:45 PM ET
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” is the only law in the country that encourages people to lie or be fired if they choose to be honest. It’s a law that hurts not only the men and women who put themselves at risk serving in our armed forces, but also jeopardizes our national security. And it is a law that must be repealed.

A recent study found that 8 out of 10 Americans support repealing the law. Regardless of their political party, people recognize that on the battlefield it doesn't matter if a soldier is gay or straight. What matters is they get the job done to protect our country.
When the House debated and voted on this issue early this summer, there were members on both sides of the aisle that weren't ready to support this repeal. They wanted to see an extensive report by the military that was scheduled to come out Dec. 1. Well, the report has come out and it unequivocally stated that this change in policy does not represent a threat to the security of this country. Any and all opposition to the repeal has manifested in vague, unsubstantiated worry. No one has presented a single concrete example as to how exactly the presence of openly serving gays will distract or disrupt unit cohesion.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense have been very clear that they want to see this policy legislatively repealed. Why? Because repeal of this policy is inevitable. It’s a question of when not if. There are already several court orders in various stages of appeal. The military feels that repeal through the legislative process is better for military readiness than running the risk of having an instant court order “flip the off switch,” which would disrupt the regular military planning process. The sooner we act the better. Despite any differences in opinion on when to repeal DADT, it is clear that leaving it up to the courts is the wrong way to go about it. This is not an issue that will be brushed away nor will its resolution wait patiently for a convenient time.

And, this is the way President Obama wanted it to go from the very beginning..he knew what needed to be done in spite of what all the professional whiners insisted to the contrary.

This is a place where you can freely speak your mind. It is great to have such a community. There are so many out there that will criticize you for all sorts of things. One thing that the community should do is provide a place for centralized location to speak your mind. This sort of campaign needs more business continuity in order to effectively communicate its stance. Thanks for providing this community.

If any of the complainers had been willing to listen to the plan, it would have saved a lot of internal party strife. Now, some of us dislike other people based solely on their handling of this issue, and their hysterical rhetoric slandering our President. It's a lot like the Civil Rights issue of yore. Many Democrats premanently defected to the republic party over what was a lost cause historically.
