RE: 8.9 Earthquake in Japan
maybe people should PM Cha and Kona.

the warning for Hawai'i :

ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011
(it is now 9:47 pm thursday there)

http://www.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?id=....11.073148

EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011
MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

Portland news is announcing the tsunami arriving here at 7:30. I'm guessing it'll be barely noticeable like the last tsunami was. But I guess I should watch just to make sure.

I just had that discussion on Facebook. I was watching the warning center and a couple of people said a tsunami warning had been announced. It took us all a while to figure out that it came from the news. I went down to the beach to watch the last tsunami. Maybe - Maybe - there was a bit of rougher water, but I couldn't swear to it. It'll probably be the same here this time.

Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii, Pacific
Zone includes Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South America
breaking news

HONOLULU — The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has widened its tsunami warning to include Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific Ocean, while a watch notice was issued for west coast of the U.S.

Sirens were sounded in Honolulu shortly after the warning was issued Thursday at 9:31 p.m. Haiwaii time.

The warning follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan.

It says the estimated earliest arrival in Hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 2:59 a.m. local time time Friday (7:59 a.m. ET).

(snipped)

A tsunami watch was also issued for the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California as well as parts of Alaska, The Oregonian newspaper reported. The paper said any wave which reached the coast could hit just before 7:30 a.m. local time Friday.

The Tsunami Watch continues in effect for the coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to Chignik Bay, Alaska.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

A Tsunami Watch means that all coastal residents in the watch area should prepare for possible evacuation. A tsunami watch is issued to areas which will not be immediately impacted by the tsunami. Watch areas will either be upgraded to warning or advisory status, or canceled.

At 9:46 PM Pacific Standard Time on March 10, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.8 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) This earthquake has generated a tsunami which could cause damage to coastal regions in a warning or advisory. The waves are expected to first reach Shemya, Alaska at 12:13 AM AKST on March 11. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site:

http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/

Will update every 30 minutes

it says the San Francisco watch is "low" level.
be safe west coasters!!

Oh great. Now what. I just saw this. My first response is denial. I think I have to pack up. Shit. Should I really panic? Oh my god I can't believe this. Is there some place that tells you how big the wave is?

the site, i'll put link in one sec, says even in Japan it was only 10 feet, but it depends on land where it comes ashore. more in a sec.
do you have a way to get more inland?

I don't think I'll go to the beach this time, lol. Okay. I'm calm now. I'll just wait a while and I guess see how bad the waves are and hope they aren't bad at all. Okay. Calmer. Calm.

whew! glad to hear that, sandnsea!

you might call your local police for an update, and if you want to go inland, they would probably give a "civil assist" if you don't have another way. do you have a radio and station with civil authority announcements? they should be making things clear right now.

Oh yeah. The local radio. haha. Forgot all about that. Eugene has a magicjack commercial on, that's worse than Charlie Sheen. I bet they'd be glad if we all washed away, cheap oceanfront property for them, lol. Okay. Focus. Do I have a radio? I don't think so. I'm fine to get out of here. Car is gassed, etc. It's just nothing I ever expected is all. Off to find a radio.

Thank you so much.

Just found a couple of stations that are updating on Facebook. Awesome! Our local officials are out of bed and keeping up with the info and will decide about an evacuation. Whew. I can't go anywhere unless I haul the entire family with me!

Yeah..hi sandnsea~Hug It seems if there is to be mandatory evacuation that there will be officials coming out here with bullhorns ..probably will soon since the projected hit will be at 3am. Not too far to a hill and where we are is not in the danger zone of a tsunami listed in the phone book. But, you never freaking know.

Glad you're calm now, sandnsea~ Kiss

The Ocean is in turmoil! I don't want to leave but time will tell. I just went up and talked to my landlady who said I could hitch a ride with her if it came to that. I told her my bag was packed and she hasn't packed anything yet.

Her daughter-in-law's mother works for an airline here and they told them to all go home..no flights.

I hope it's just extra precaution for everyone.

Actually when I first moved here I thought I was a lot closer to the beach but I walked it Tuesday and it's 50 minutes..we're out here in the Valley. In the tsunami info in the front of the phone book we're not in the "shaded area" which is the Evacuation area so it remains to be seen..2 1/2 hours until touchdown time.

Thank you for being around it makes the waiting easier!

i think it is better to be safe. if you have a ride up, you might as well head uphill.
it is already a tsunami. i can not find the maps they usually have showing strike areas. one site is being reconstructed. such timing ....

It depends on if my nice landlady decides to go..her son and his family live in the front section and she says he doesn't want to leave. They have two young kids so we'll see if it's mandatory or not. She has her own car..but, I'm ready..just waiting on whatever!

So weird how life can change on a dime~BounceWow

It depends on if my nice landlady decides to go..her son and his family live in the front section and she says he doesn't want to leave. They have two young kids so we'll see if it's mandatory or not. She has her own car..but, I'm ready..just waiting on whatever!

So weird how life can change on a dime~BounceWow

"So weird how life can change on a dime" ~BounceWow indeed!!

if she doesn't decide to go, and you want to i hope you won't hesitate to get authorities to take you even if she won't go! they will!

i'm so glad you came here, and let us know, Cha!

edit to add: but thank you for that! it IS comforting to see that, Cha!
but if they evacuate, or when they do, i hope yu will do so. or maybe with your landlady, before roads are busier.

It's weird too because I've had so many Tsunami dreams in the past but no one ever got hurt.. Just saw these huge gigantic waves coming and we'd all out run 'em!!

I dunno if this helps at all, but Stuart Weinstein with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says they are estimating about a meter wave along the US West Coast.

Siren just went off. I am not in an evacuation area, but I live a couple hundred yards from the river which is my biggest worry. There's massive dunes on the other side though. I think I should be okay. People are leaving. A friend up by the bridge said there has been traffic tonight, and there is never traffic at night. Definitely packing though.

And I don't have a link for this, but it seems Tuvalu may cease to exist.

This is the Pacific island that's already in danger of being submerged due to rising seas caused by global climate change. There was a guy talking on the BBC at one point that said the wave headed there is bigger than the island is.

The poor Japanese. Film of the wave went on forever, so far inland.
You could just see it heading inland for miles and miles and miles. The earthquake alone was enough to flatten cities, but the tsunami came wave after wave. Those poor souls.

Looks like everyone in the Pacific Ring of Fire is on alert tonight. One thing I learned growing up in the Islands is never ever go down to the beach to "watch the tsunami." Never.

I'm 3 miles inland, but not very high above sea level. My area seems to be only on Advisory -- I'm sure it's the curve of the coastline past Point Conception that brings it down a notch. Anyhow, for me, off to bed. Anyone in Hawai'i or Crescent City, CA -- do what the local authorities tell you and if they say go to higher ground, git.

BTW, anyone notice that the Prez was awakened with the news and that he's already told FEMA to gear up? Now THAT'S change I can believe in -- FEMA once again run by professionals!

Now THAT'S change I can believe in -- FEMA once again run by professionals!

thank you for that update, Hekate!!
i am very pleased you are inland!

and thank you about the Prez!!

It's been a horrible day watching the news as more comes out of Japan on the damage there.

i think the aftershocks have them being cautious. advisories and watches are still being put out there, even though as far as i know each place has now sounded the "all clear."

Just got back home. The road to my house was closed. My daughter lives in a safe area so we stayed there this morning. It was low tide so the waves really weren't much worse than a rough storm. Better safe than sorry though. Glad Cha is okay too! Has Kona checked in?

Hi sandnsea..it's good to be back home..we had to evacutate to the hills though because there was that possibility. It's amazing there wasn't more action elsewhere since it was so strong around Japan. I'm about to post an article on the low impact on Hawaii and other Islands.

Glad you could go to your daughter's house!

Haven't heard what Kona has had to go through during this crisis.

Does this mean you weren't swept out to sea?
Wow

Confirmed, Fox "news" makes you stupid

The ones you are noticing are more terrified than anything else. They are lashing out because they are comfortable; and to acknowledge what is happening is a threat to that comfort. Ignore them, for they are not the voices that will rise in the coming days, months and years. They are not the voices of our collected humanity. They are the old voices of fear and impotence. - Anonymous

Oh good! I figured he was okay since the tsunamis didn't hit any of the Hawaiian Islands but it's nice to hear he's posting.

Edit I was wrong..there was damage especially on The Big Island but no one was killed..thankfully.

Governor Abercrombie:
"Hawaii was just the most blessed place on the face of the Earth today."

how blessed you are, dear Cha. it did hit the islands. check this out:

http://www.civilbeat.com/articles/2011/0...in-charge/

-snip-

Collapsed piers, sunken boats, submerged cars, slammed harbors, clogged lagoons, broken seawalls, flooded buildings, rubble-strewn beaches, ruined fishponds and historic places — even homes that floated away.

"A lot of sad stories," said Ed Teixeira, vice director of Hawaii State Civil Defense, particularly on the Big Island, which suffered the most damage of all the islands and is still mending from the 2006 earthquake off the Kailua-Kona coast.

Teixeira said there are indications that a wave at Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island was 15-feet high, over twice the height of waves that hit elsewhere in the island chain.

-snip-

Over the course of the night, the governor made multiple references to "aloha," as in a statement released just after midnight that read in part, "This is a time to be sensible and act with aloha. Please be mindful of your neighbors, especially for the elderly who may need kokua at this time."

is sounds like Abercrombie did extremely well.

and this:

Tsunami Moves Through Hawai‘i; Widespread Coastal Damage on the Big Island
12 March, 2011

http://www.taimionline.com/articles/2769

KEALAKEKUA, HAWAI‘I – Civil Defense personnel and residents of the “Big Island” of Hawai‘i are still assessing the extent of the damage that occurred during this morning’s tsunami waves, which hit the island around 4 a.m.

Beaches were swamped and low-lying areas flooded throughout the Hawaiian Islands after the tsunami, spawned by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan, raced across the Pacific and surged onto Hawaii’s shores.

Most of the damage, however, appears to have been centered on the west-facing coast of Hawai‘i Island, particularly in Kailua-Kona and the Kealakekua Bay area, where water rushed up into roadways, tumbling cars, damaging coastal buildings, and in at least one case, sweeping an entire house off its foundations and into the sea. The house is still, at press time, floating in Kealakekua Bay.
There are no reports of injuries or deaths at this time.

-snip-

###

and i heard some about Maui, too.

edit - here, briefly about Maui:

"Low-lying areas in Maui were flooded as 7-foot waves crashed ashore .... "

i am so glad you are okay

Hug RE: 8.9 Earthquake in Japan
Thank you so much for those articles encompassing what really happened on the Islands in the aftermath of the tsunami warning, nofurylike.

A friend was giving me a ride to the beach yesterday(we couldn't go swimming red flags were all around).. and we were talking about our evacuation experiences the night before and I mentioned about no waves coming and she said she heard from her neighbor that there was some damage on the Big Island! I was going to go home and investigate but I was so tired from just 2 hours sleep and wanting to stay up so I could sleep well last night that I never did!

There are a lot of people on these Islands who have loved ones in Japan and are waiting to find out if they're okay or not. Grouphug

i know, it would be hard to tell there was real damage judging by media coverage, ah? i was surprised to find any mention of it, after so many reports of no damage at all!
i was just very relieved that at least the energy struck from a direction that spared the area you are in, Cha! Hug

o my, yes, there are so many Japanese there!! Cry Grouphug
