By Art Aisner, Special Writer

Three workers were injured, including one critically, in an explosion Thursday morning at an Ann Arbor Township worksite, officials said.

Firefighters and other first responders were sent to the area of Dixboro Road just south of Plymouth Road for reports of an explosion shortly after 8 a.m.

Dispatchers learned that the injured workers were in a 30-foot-deep hole in the ground in the 1800 block of Dixboro, prompting authorities to activate the Washtenaw County Technical Rescue Team.

However, the team was not needed as the workers rescued themselves by using their ladder, said WCTRT Director Dan Cain, a captain with the Ypsilanti Fire Department.
