Romney Flashback: Poor Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside The Home Or Lose Welfare

In case it wasn’t already clear that last week’s controversy over stay at home moms was entirely manufactured, this should put the question to bed.

Romney and allies cried that Democrats had declared “war on moms” after a Democratic strategist said Romney’s wife hadn’t worked a day in her life. Romney’s camp said this meant Democrats don’t value stay at home moms and motherhood, while they believe that women who stay home are doing real work.

But for every Romney action, there is an equal and opposite Romney reaction, and this morning, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes dug up a video of Romney from just January in which the Republican presidential candidate said he wanted to require women who receive welfare to work outside the home, even if their children are very young. He told a New Hampshire audience:

“I wanted to increase the work requirement,” said Romney. “I said, for instance, that even if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, ‘Well that’s heartless.’ And I said, ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.”

Heh - at least Chris Hayes didn't cower like a wimp when this ridiculous fake controversy played out - he made fun of how the media acted like puppets on a string acting out a play that they had no control of; then he dug up this video from January showing just how fucking hypocritical Romney is on this issue. Take that wimpy media and caver inners.

AWESOME. Now this is the way to take down Romney on women and the economy. Leave Ann Romney alone.

It is assinine for these people to demand poor mothers go back to work - and then turn around and criticize their lack of parenting when they can't be in the home because they're required to go back to work. And no matter what he says about child care assistance, there is never enough. Finally, you can't advocate for child care assistance AND tax cuts at the same fucking time.

This is what pisses me off about the stupid-ass Ann Romney arguments - they distract from real issues, like the millions of moms who are beaten down because of their economic status and the millions of dads who can no longer find decent jobs which is half the reason these moms leave them in the first place.

When you're rich, you can make the choice to be a dignified mother and stay home too.

Poor? You're undignified BECAUSE you're poor. At least that's how I interpret this bit of snobbery from Richie Rich.

Simply being rich confers dignity upon a woman.

Poor women have to work to gain dignity.

It's a pretty simple thought process.

be the preferred method. The problem is Mitt himself created this situation, 1100+ anti-women bills put forth by the Republicans and Mitt says he relies on his wife to tell him the details of American women. This is on Mitt, if he and his campaign insist on Ann being their expert then she is fair game.

The last time I checked President Obama did not use Michelle in such a role and yet she was attacked for her parenting, her work history, her comments from college, her looks, her race and more.

If Mitt and Ann want to play in this nasty game that the Republicans have made nastier well.....
