<..> But how have they convinced the poor to vote this way? Since World War II, and especially since the cultural wars of the 1960s, social “wedge” issues related to race and religion now play a more important role in voting habits than practical economic concerns. Take a look at Justice Roy Moore, the 10 Commandments Judge who helps demonize anyone who doesn’t believe in these Christian “Laws” and trounces on the principle of religious freedom.

They’ve convinced the people that everything is going to be good in America. All our problems are going to be solved. There will be no more illegitimacy, no more divorce, everything’s going to be fine if you follow our religious model. Partly because preachers tell them that the Democratic Party is a godless party. It’s also because the Democratic Party is made up of a large number of African-Americans, and working class whites just shouldn’t vote that way.

But it’s a religious comparison of convenience, not one that makes sense. Take a look below at this satirical portrayal of Obama vs Romney. How is it these evangelicals will line up, albeit reluctantly, behind Romney now? Simple. President Obama’s the black guy, the bad guy of the South, the enemy of everything the Confederacy stands for.

As preposterous as this may seem, is it so far fetched? I don’t believe it is. The Religious Right will cast all aspersions aside, hold their noses vote and for Romney just to get rid of that foreigner in the White House.

Interesting, and believable.

They give the greedy and selfish excuses to vote Republican. That's all there is to it.

Author John Steinbeck once said that socialism will never get a foothold in American because the poor do not consider themselves poor, but "temporarily inconvenienced millionaires."

The GOP has been using this ploy for decades now. It appeals to the poor by convincing them that a vote for a republican is their chance at becoming rich themselves. Which is a crock, of course. But it is still working, still a powerful motivator.

Quite right! All of the "temporarily inconvenienced" and middle-class millionaires that are/trying to live beyond their means because "they're gonna be rich in the next couple of weeks!" So, they vote for the repubs.

The clue-by-four is NOT a gentle wake-up call. Facepalm

You have to consider that half of the population has an IQ under 100. We have seen the studies regarding "conservatives". Their fear centers in their brains are more highly developed. They don't tend to be swayed by logic, reason, or facts and they will dig in and defend their positions against any and all arguments. They will also gravitate toward the black and white.

Of course when you talk about human behavior you are dealing with something complex. Liberals can display this kind of authoritarian personality too, but it does tend to appear more often in "conservatives".

Face it, they don't think the same way we do. Negotiation is not going to work with "conservatives".

A Democratic acquaintance said just this week that Evangelicals won't be voting for Romney because he's a Mormon. He based that on talking to the people he works with.

It'll be interesting--I think there might be some leaving the top of the ticket blank amongst that population.

I know that the 10 Commandments Justice Moore was a Karl Rove product. Since Rove lives very close to Alabama, I'd guess that much of what you hear in Alabama politics is pure Rove.

Obviously they don't like Romney. But they are fear mongering and pushing the lie that President Obama is the end of the world. Their base will turn out and they will get a fair number of votes simply because the economy is still bad. But I don't think they will win.

I have no doubt that a sizable chunk of the Christian right will not support Rmoney, because it has long been an evangelical tenet that Mormonism is not real Christianity. Some even call them pagans (an insult to those of us who are). In this case their faith will indeed be an impediment to their toe-ing the GOP line.

I agree with you, there will be a lot of religious people who will NOT vote for Mitt because of his religious beliefs, which are far from being what the religious right believes. In 2008 I was posting on a board where the right wingers were very outspoken about NOT voting for Romeny because of his religion and the fact that they strongly believe Mormons are a "cult", and there was not way in this world they would vote to put a member of a "cult" in the WH. Now they wouldn't vote for a democrat, they simply said they would not vote for Mitt if he was the nominee, and I believe they meant it.

I also think that by the time the elections roll around there will be a whole lot more out about Romeny that will make a lot more people think twice about voting for him, even if they have been life long republicans, Mitt and his flip flops are going to turn a lot of people off. Now they may still vote for the down ticket candidates for other offices, but not for Mitt.

If I recall correctly, even Joe Scarborough said that was what would happen if Romeny got the nomination. The other thing is that the "big guns" in the republican party didn't even try to run this year, they are all waiting for 2016 because they know Romney doesn't stand a chance. This is just the "sacrificial" lamb they are putting out like they did with McCain. They knew republicans couldn't win in 2008 after what Bush did to the country, so they let McCain have his shot at it. Mitt will have his shot, and then he will be out of the picture come 2016 republicans like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Thune, and others can run and hope the democrats don't have anyone who could beat them.
